Whole whisky casks, by the numbers

Whole-cask auction results, broker guide ranges, and the bottled-whisky indices that must not be mistaken for cask prices.

There is no verified, public, current whole-cask price index. That is the single most important thing to know about this market: what exists is auction anecdotes at the top end, broker guide ranges in the middle, and bottled-whisky indices that track a different asset. This page keeps those three things in separate, labeled groups, because the most expensive mistake in cask buying is reading a bottle price as a cask price — or a guide range as a guaranteed value.

The honest picture: two Karuizawa casks set the whole-cask auction record in March 2026 at £2,125,000 each, while broker guides put ordinary new-make and young casks in the low four to five figures. At the same time, bottled rare whisky has fallen from its 2022 peak — down 9% in 2024 and a further 10.9% in the final quarter of 2025 — which is context for sentiment, not a price for any cask.

How to read these numbers

Included: verified whole-cask auction results (Christie's 2026, Whisky Hammer 2022); broker guide ranges from Cask Trade, The 1901 Group, and Mark Littler, each labeled as a guide rather than an index; Scotch Whisky Association maturing-stock and export totals; the physical cooperage market, labeled as vessels only; and Knight Frank / Noble & Co bottled-whisky figures, kept in their own group. Excluded: any current cask index (none verified in public text), Braeburn return claims (the firm entered administration in 2025), unverified auction estimates presented as results, and vendor market-size forecasts that conflate bottled whisky with casks.

Guide ranges are asking-price guidance from brokers, not transaction averages. Auction results describe individual casks, not a liquid index, and past results do not predict future values.
